What is Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport and a form of self-defense that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique; most notably, by applying joint-locks and choke holds to defeat them.

How does the belt system work in Jiu Jitsu?

WHITE – Beginner, any age, GREY – 04 to 06 years of age, YELLOW – 07 to 15 years of age, ORANGE – 10 to 15 years of age, GREEN – 13 to 15 years of age, BLUE – 16 years of age or older, PURPLE – 16 years of age or older, BROWN – 18 years of age or older, BLACK – 19 years of age or older, RED AND BLACK and finally RED.

How long does it take to get a black belt in jiu jitsu?

Achieving a black belt in jiu jitsu takes a long time, it depends on how much you train and how dedicated you are. Some people never get to that level, others can reach it anywhere between 8 and 12 years with solid training.

What is a typical jiu jitsu class like?

A typical class will begin with a warm up, followed by instruction. After that we often do drills which help the student work on fighting from a specific position or situation. Then in most cases we finish with free sparring.

What is the sparring like?

In jiu jitsu, the sparring is almost always full-contact, however it is also extremely safe because the students are instructed to “tap out” when they feel the pressure from a choke or join-lock. Tapping out ensures your personal safety and there is always a coach on hand to ensure the safety of everyone in the room.

How much does it cost to train?

We have different plans and pricing structures to meet the needs of our students. The first lesson is free, we strongly encourage you to come and try out a class. After your first lesson the coach at your location will go over the different plans with you and find something that can fit your needs.
